In the meantime, you can review some of the factors you’ll want to consider. We are happy to discuss them in more detail with you when you visit our Red Bank, NJ office.

How Severe Are Your Orthodontic Issues?

In some cases, either Invisalign or braces can straighten your teeth and solve your orthodontic problems. However, Invisalign won’t work well for certain conditions, including impacted teeth, severe crowding, large gaps between teeth, or severely misaligned bites. If you have one or more of these problems, we may recommend braces instead.

Invisalign or Braces: How Important Is Appearance?

If appearance during treatment is important to you, you may want to consider Invisalign. Unlike traditional metal braces, the clear aligners used for Invisalign treatment blend easily into your smile. However, we also offer the option of clear braces. Their wires and ceramic brackets are either clear or tooth-colored, so they are much less noticeable than traditional braces.

Removable Aligners Are Easier to Maintain

Since you can remove Invisalign aligners, it’s easier to keep your teeth clean. You can eat whatever you’d like, without worrying about food getting stuck in metal hardware. You also won’t need specialized gear like a floss threader for oral hygiene. That said, aligners can become stained if you don’t remove them when eating or drinking liquids other than water. Plus, it’s easier to lose or damage aligners.

Aligners Work in Less Time Than Braces

Aligners also typically work in less time than braces. Depending on the orthodontic issues you need to address and the Invisalign system you choose (traditional Invisalign, Invisalign Lite, or Invisalign Express), you can complete treatment in three months to two years. The average treatment time for traditional Invisalign is 12 months. Braces usually take one to three years.

Invisalign or Braces: Cost Is an Important Consideration

Cost depends on many factors, including the problems you are trying to solve and the specific solution you choose. When you visit us for a consultation, we can give you a better idea of how much you can expect to pay for our orthodontic options. However, braces usually cost less than Invisalign. In addition, insurance is more likely to offer coverage (usually for patients under 18) for braces than for Invisalign.

You Need More Self Discipline for Invisalign

Removable aligners offer many advantages. However, this flexibility can be a disadvantage if you aren’t committed to wearing aligners at all times, except for meals. If you aren’t willing to wear them for at least 22 hours a day, braces may be a better choice for you. Plus, it’s easy to misplace and even accidentally discard aligners. We recommend carrying a case with you and keeping aligners in a case at all times when they aren’t in your mouth.
